What qualifies as a dental emergency?
Dental emergencies include severe tooth aches that won’t go away, knocked-out or broken teeth, loose permanent teeth, abscess or swelling in your mouth or face, uncontrolled bleeding from your gums or mouth, lost fillings or crowns causing pain and jaw injuries. Basically, if you’re in significant pain, have trauma to your teeth or mouth or notice sudden swelling or bleeding, contact our emergency dentist office right away. When in doubt, call us and we’ll help determine if you need immediate care.
Do you offer same-day emergency dental appointments?
Yes! We prioritize dental emergencies and offer same-day appointments whenever possible. If you’re experiencing a dental emergency in Indianapolis, call our office as soon as possible. We’ll do everything we can to see you the same day and get you out of pain quickly. Even if it’s late in the day, contact us. We make room in our schedule for urgent situations because we know dental pain can’t wait.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
If you knock out a permanent tooth, time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the top part, not the root), gently rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If you can’t reinsert it, keep it most by placing it in milk or holding it in your cheek. Get to our dentist office within 30-60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Call us immediately while you’re on your way so we can prepare for your arrival.
What should I do for a severe toothache?
For severe toothache relief, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the tooth or gums as this can burn tissue. Then contact our office right away. Severe toothaches usually indicate an infection or deep cavity that needs professional treatment. Don’t wait and hope it gets better, tooth pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong.
Can you fix a broken or chipped tooth?
Yes, we can repair broken and chipped teeth with several treatment options depending on the severity. Small chips can often be fixed with dental bonding in a single visit. Larger breaks might need a crown to protect and restore the tooth. If the break extends into the tooth’s nerve, you might need a root canal followed by a crown. Contact our dental office as soon as possible after breaking a tooth, quick treatment gives us the best chance of saving it and preventing infection.
Do you handle dental emergencies for kids?
Yes, we provide emergency dental care for the entire family. Whether your child knocked out a tooth playing sports or you’re dealing with a severe toothache, contact our family dentistry office right away. We prioritize dental emergencies and offer same-day appointments when possible. Having a family dentist who knows your dental history makes emergency situations less stressful.
Is a lost filling or crown considered a dental emergency?
A lost filling or crown isn’t always always an emergency, but should be addressed quickly. If you’re not in pain, call us during business hours to schedule a repair appointment. However, if the exposed tooth is sensitive or painful, contact our office right away. Keep the crown if it fell out and bring it with you, we can often reattach it. Avoid chewing on that tooth and protect it with temporary dental cement from a pharmacy if needed until we can see you.
How can I prevent dental emergencies?
While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, you can reduce your risk by wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding chewing ice or hard candy, not using your teeth to open packages, maintaining good oral hygiene to prevent decay and infections and visiting our office regularly for checkups. Many dental emergencies result from untreated cavities or gum disease that could have been caught early with routine care. Regular preventative visits help us identify and fix small problems before they become emergencies.
